iPhone 18 Pro Max Specifications

Here is a quick look at the main specs. Additionally, the table below makes it easy to compare them with other phones.

Design and Colors

Apple kept the same size as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, the phone is heavier at 249 grams, compared with 233 grams last year. This is because of the bigger battery and the new cooling system. In addition, the body is an aluminum unibody with a Ceramic Shield cutout for MagSafe charging. Moreover, the cutout now matches the frame color, so the two-tone look is gone. As a result, the back looks cleaner. Meanwhile, Black returns, and the other colors are Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

Key points about design:

• Size: 163.4mm x 78mm x 8.75mm
• IP68 rating for water and dust resistance
• Action button and Camera Control button included

Display

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch OLED display with a 2868 x 1320 resolution. Because it reaches 3,000 nits outdoors, the screen stays clear in strong sunlight. Additionally, Ceramic Shield 2 protects the display and adds an anti-reflective coating. Moreover, the Dynamic Island is smaller now, since Apple moved the infrared camera under the display. As a result, it can show three Live Activities at once instead of two.

Key points about the display:

• Up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness
• Always-On display with 1-nit minimum brightness
• Smaller Dynamic Island with three Live Activities

Performance

The new A20 Pro chip has a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU. Furthermore, each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator. According to Apple, the CPU is up to 20 percent faster and the GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro. In fact, independent tests found the phone 24 to 26 percent faster than the iPhone 17 Pro. Cooling is better too, because the vapor chamber has three times more surface area. Consequently, the phone stays cooler and holds its speed longer during gaming and video editing.

Key points about performance:

• 50% more memory bandwidth
• Dual 16-core Neural Engine for faster AI tasks
• Up to 40% better sustained performance

Camera

The camera is the biggest upgrade this year. First, the 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture with four settings. For example, a wider aperture lets in more light at night, while a narrower one gives sharper detail across the frame. Additionally, the larger sensor improves low-light photos. Besides that, the Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras are 48MP as well. Moreover, the Telephoto offers 8x optical-quality zoom.

Video is stronger too. For instance, you can record 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps. Furthermore, you can apply Cinematic effects after recording. Finally, the new Pro controls let you set aperture and shutter speed by hand.

Key points about the camera:

• ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Dual Capture for creators
• Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance
• Apple Reference Image feature to verify that a photo was not edited

Battery and Charging

Battery life is the best on any iPhone so far. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of video playback. However, these numbers apply to eSIM-only models. Since versions with a physical SIM tray have a smaller battery, please check which version you are buying. Charging is faster as well. For example, a 60W adapter reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes. In addition, the phone supports 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging.

Key points about battery:

• Up to 30 hours of typical use
• Up to 45 hours of video playback
• USB-C port for charging and data

Connectivity

Apple’s new N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Moreover, most models use Apple’s C2 modem, which adds faster uploads and mmWave 5G in the US. However, the US iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 modem instead. Additionally, Ultra Wideband is upgraded to the second generation.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a strong step forward, but it is not a complete redesign. First, the chip is faster. Second, the main camera now has a variable aperture. Third, the battery lasts longer and charges faster. Overall, the changes are useful, although the design looks almost the same.

Should You Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

If you own an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the upgrade is small. Therefore, you can wait. On the other hand, if you use an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older, the jump in speed, camera and battery is big. Likewise, photography lovers will enjoy the variable aperture the most.
